An Unforgettable Journey Trekking Perito Moreno Glacier and Exploring the Heart of Patagonia

If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Argentina, trekking the Perito Moreno Glacier should be at the top of your list. Nestled within the breathtaking Los Glaciares National Park in the southern Patagonian region, this natural wonder offers a combination of stunning views, unique trekking opportunities, and an unforgettable connection with nature.

Located in Los Glaciares National Park, the Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the most iconic and most visited attractions in Argentina. The nearest airport is El Calafate, a charming town that serves as the main hub for visitors to the region.

Our Experience – Minitrekking the Glacier

When planning our visit, we all agreed on one thing: we wanted to walk on the glacier itself. We booked the Perito Moreno Glacier Minitrekking Excursion, which is one of the most popular activities in the area. There are daily visitor limits, and age restrictions that apply, so be sure to check eligibility and availability ahead of time.

Exploring the Glacier Walkways

We started our day at the glacier walkways, a 4.7 km well-designed network of boardwalks offering panoramic views of the glacier from multiple angles. From these platforms, we had great views of both the glacier’s front face and its aerial formations. The ice was a striking blue and white, bright and clear in the sunlight. Along the walkway, several balconies and viewpoints provided excellent spots to take in the glacier’s beauty.

At times, we saw huge blocks of ice break off and crash into the lake below with massive splashes. Watching this happen was both spectacular and unforgettable, a powerful reminder of nature at work. From anywhere on the walkways, we could hear the glacier breaking. The noise was so loud it echoed across the entire valley, like rolling thunder.

Crossing Lago Rico by Boat

Boat ride across Lago Rico

Next, we boarded a boat across Lago Rico. Lago Rico is a lake fed by glaciers. The 15-minute ride gave us an incredible water-level view of the glacier’s southern wall. It was an awe-inspiring sight, massive, blue, and seemingly alive with movement.

Trekking on the Glacier

Icebergs from the glacier

Once we reached the shore, we were greeted by expert mountain guides who led us on a short walk along the lake and take pictures of the glacier. Before starting the actual glacier trek, we listened to a brief but fascinating talk about glaciology and the history of the Perito Moreno Glacier.

Crampon station and the start of the trek

Then came the real adventure. We were fitted with crampons and helmets, followed by a quick safety briefing. The 1.5-hour trek across the glacier was surreal. We moved in a single-file line, holding onto a rope for safety as we navigated across shimmering blue ice, deep crevasses, and surreal ice formations. It was both thrilling and humbling, an absolute highlight of our trip.

A Short Walk Through the Andean Forest

After completing the trek, we had one more surprise, a short walk through the Andean forest. Though brief, it was a peaceful and beautiful way to end the day, surrounded by native trees and quiet natural beauty.

Heading Back

Our boat was waiting at the shore to take us back across Lago Rico. From there, we returned to El Calafate, tired but absolutely exhilarated by the day’s adventure.

Tips and Advice

Getting there

The base town is El Calafate. From El Calafate, it takes about one and a half hours by bus, rental car, or organized tour to reach the glacier.

Tickets

An entrance ticket to Los Glaciares National Park is required to visit Perito Moreno Glacier. Tickets can be purchased online independently or included when booking a guided tour.

You don’t need a tour to access the walkways, they can be visited independently by public bus or rental car. Just remember to purchase your park entry ticket in advance if you’re not joining a tour.

If you book a Mini-Trekking tour through the GetYourGuide link, the national park entrance ticket and access to the walkways are included, which makes the whole process much easier.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit is between November and March when the weather is most favorable. If you can avoid school holiday periods, it’s best to plan your trip outside of December. During that month, prices are at their peak and getting tickets for the mini trekking can be very challenging.

Glacier trekking reservations

The mini trekking excursion is strictly limited and spots sell out quickly especially in peak season December to February. It is not possible to book on the spot so reservations should be made well in advance (atleast 6 months ahead). The tickets for mini trekking cost about $350.00 USD. It was three times the price when we went less than a year ago and it has changed since then.

Age restrictions

When we went the maximum age limit for mini trekking was 55. At the time of writing it has been extended to 65. Since this keeps changing it is important to check the current rules before booking. If you do not qualify the walkways alone are still a fantastic way to experience the glacier.

What to bring

The tour provides crampons and helmets. Warm clothing in layers, waterproof shoes, gloves, and sunglasses are highly recommended. The glare from the ice can be very strong.

Walkways vs trekking

Even if you cannot do the trek the walkways provide excellent views and close encounters with the glacier.

Time needed

Plan for a full day including the walkways, boat, trek, and travel time. It is worth taking it slow and enjoying every part of the visit.

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?

Yes. Whether you’re walking the boardwalks or trekking across the glacier itself, visiting Perito Moreno Glacier is a must-do experience in Argentina. It’s not just a sightseeing trip, it’s a chance to connect deeply with one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders.
