Aiguille du Midi, The Highest Cable Car Rides in Europe, Mont Blanc Region, French Alps with Views of the Swiss and Italian Alps, Chamonix
Aiguille du Midi
Aiguille du Midi is one of the most popular things to do in Chamonix, France.
We went at the end of July, and it was the perfect time to visit Aiguille du Midi. The best time to start your trip is early in the morning, as clouds usually form around the peaks by midday.
Where we stayed
We stayed at Hôtel de L’Arve by HappyCulture, which was a great base for exploring Chamonix. One of the biggest advantages was its location, the hotel is just a short walk from the Aiguille du Midi ticket office, making it convenient for early cable car departures and avoiding unnecessary travel in the morning.
If you’re still deciding where to stay, you can also browse other hotels in Chamonix here.
Tour we booked
If you want a stress-free experience, the best option is to book a tour that includes tickets and transportation. This is ideal if you’re visiting Chamonix for the first time or you don’t want to deal with booking and planning.
Mont Blanc Massif
The Mont Blanc massif is a major mountain range in the Alps, located primarily in France and Italy, with its northeastern end extending into Switzerland. It is named after its highest peak, Mont Blanc, which is the highest mountain in both the Alps and Western Europe.
What is Aiguille du Midi and what to see
Aiguille du Midi is a mountain in the Mont Blanc massif with an altitude of 3842 metres. Its close proximity to Mont Blanc is the reason there are cable cars to go to the summit of Aiguille du Midi, to get a closer look at Mont Blanc and to explore the French Alps. The cable car was the highest cable car ride in the world until 1975.
How to reach Aiguille Du Midi
To reach Aiguille du Midi we had to ride two cable cars, each lasting approximately five minutes. The second one is especially exciting and has absolutely amazing terraces with views of the French Alps. The grandeur of the Alps is visible from every terrace we reach. Then we take an elevator to the summit of Aiguille du Midi(takes about less than a minute), from where we get a close view of Mont Blanc, which is 4810 metres tall. From Aiguille du Midi, you can ride the Panoramic Mont-Blanc gondola to Pointe Helbronner in Italy.
The cable-car journey starts at the Aiguille du Midi cable-car station in Chamonix. Chamonix is a small town in the foothills of the Alps, and wherever you are, you can easily locate the Aiguille du Midi ticket station. The ticket will show a time when you board, but it’s around that time rather than exact.
First Cable Car Ride
The first cable car takes you from Chamonix to Plan de l’Aiguille at 2317 metres. Its a short 5 minute ride. You get to see the beautiful view of Chamonix below from the cable car.

Waiting for the second cable car ride
Once you exit, you’ll get a glimpse of the grandeur that lies ahead. Plan de l’Aiguille is also the starting point of the Grand Balcon Nord trail. If you plan on hiking this trail, you must get off here and continue to the left. However, doing both the Grand Balcon Nord and the Aiguille du Midi on the same day is not feasible, you need a full day for each.
Second Cable Car Ride
Just wait in line for the second cable car with the beautiful view. These cable cars are big enough to carry 15 people at once.
The second cable car takes you to Aiguille du Midi. Once you exit, you will find two terraces: the Lower and Upper Terrace.
You will arrive at the Lower Terrace. It already feels like being out of this world. Take in the beautiful views, breathe in the fresh air of the French Alps, and explore the different viewpoints to capture the perfect pictures. Walk around, move from one spot to another, and enjoy the endless beauty of the French Alps before climbing to the Upper Terrace.

French Alps from the Lower Terrace
From the lower terrace of the Aiguille du Midi, you can see the French Alps stretching far and wide. Pointed mountains rise in every direction, with sunlight making the rocks shine. The valleys below look soft and blue, giving a sense of how big and quiet the mountains are. The air is fresh and clear, making every detail of the mountains easy to see. It feels like you are standing on the edge of the world, surrounded by endless beauty.
Standing on the Upper Terrace gives you an even wider look at the French Alps, with the mountains stretching out clearly in every direction. No matter where we took our photographs, they turned out perfect. From this level, you can see the Lower Terrace, the bridge, and the transmitter at the summit of Aiguille du Midi. It’s very hard to walk away from a view like this, and it’s the kind of place where you naturally want to pause and take it all in.

Now take the elevator to the summit. The elevator cuts through the middle of the Aiguille du Midi mountain. There was a short wait time when we went. Once you exit the elevator, you are on the top-level terrace, Terrace 3842-that surrounds the massive TV transmitter on the summit (this rustic transmitter is visible from all over Chamonix).

Mountaineers climbing the Cosmiques Ridge
There are several viewing platforms where you can get breathtaking views of Mont Blanc and the glacier valley below. The view extends to Italy, Switzerland, and of course the French Alps. There are various routes for mountaineers to climb from Aiguille du Midi. We saw some mountaineers climbing the Cosmiques Ridge.
From the heights of Aiguille du Midi, the mountaineers look like tiny dots as they make their way across the vast glacier. Even from this distance, you can feel their courage facing the challenging terrain and weather of the French Alps.

At the summit of Aiguille du Midi, Mont Blanc rises high above the surrounding mountains, its snow-covered slopes shining in the sunlight. Standing here, we felt amazed by how huge and powerful the Alps are. The view stretches in every direction, with sharp peaks and wide white slopes as far as the eye can see. It made me feel both small and excited at the same time. Being here is unforgettable, and the sights

Step Into the Void
Step Into the Void is a glass box suspended from the side of the Aiguille du Midi mountain, hanging directly above the glaciers below. When we visited, there was a 50 minute wait, so we decided to skip it, but it’s a thrilling experience for those who dare to step inside.
Espace Mont Blanc
An indoor viewing gallery with breathtaking views over Mont Blanc and a brief history of notable ascents made on the mountain.
Hypoxia Level
It is at an altitude of 3,500 m, which is just a little less than the height of the Aiguille du Midi summit. It is an exhibition that shows the effects of altitude and hypoxia on the body due to lack of oxygen at high altitude. The station has been used in multiple experiments to study the effects of mountain sickness and our ability to adapt to high altitudes.
Espace Vertical (Museum)
It is at 3,777 m and is the highest museum ever built. It displays an interesting history of climbing and alpinism on the Mont Blanc massif and also includes displays of modern and traditional climbing equipment.
A Bit of History
We can learn the history of the cable-car construction, including the massive drive wheels that lift us to the summit.
Le Tube
It is a tube at 3,777 m. It is a 32-metre long passage around the summit. There is a gallery inside that you can walk through while enjoying the views. It has large windows offering a view of the valley below Aiguille du Midi.
Panoramic Mont-Blanc Gondola
Panoramic Mont-Blanc gondola is a thrilling experience we had and one of the best gondola rides we have ever been on. It’s a 30-minute ride one way (about 1 hour round trip) where you are hanging above the Giant Glacier far below. You are in the Alps region where France, Italy, and Switzerland meet. It is one of the most beautiful border crossings we have done.

Mont Blanc from the Mont Blanc Panoramic
The gondola can hold four people at a time and is well designed with open windows to view and photograph the incredible glacier valley below and the mountain peaks. It’s a 5 km ride that leaves from Aiguille du Midi (3,482 m) in France to Pointe Helbronner (3,466 m) in Italy, while we see the Swiss Alps to our left (east).
The gondolas travel in groups of three, creating a stunning view in
themselves. They move very slowly so we can take in the beauty of the hidden regions of the French, Swiss, and Italian Alps. While going towards Italy, we leave behind Aiguille du Midi and Mont Blanc, with a front view of Pointe Helbronner. The tickets for this gondola are not included with the Aiguille du Midi cable car and cost €38.50.
